Network Setup for a RTO College

Background

RTO College in Melbourne required a comprehensive network infrastructure to support its educational and administrative operations. The primary objectives were to ensure high-speed internet connectivity, secure and efficient network management, and seamless communication across the campus. The project involved deploying one EdgeRouter UniFi, one TP-Link router, four Ubiquiti access points, and two switches to meet the specific needs of different areas within the college. The client had specific requirements for network segmentation, ensuring that various services and devices operated optimally without interference. The client had specific requirements regarding two separate SSIDs for staff and students.

Objectives

Internal Operations

  • Staff Network: Dedicated Wi-Fi network for staff with secure access to internal systems and educational resources.
  • Student Network: High-speed internet for students to support research, online learning, and access to digital materials.
  • Digital Classrooms: Equipped with smart boards, projectors, and high-speed internet for interactive teaching.
  • Learning Management System (LMS) - Moodle: Custom-built to manage course materials, assignments, and communication between students and instructors.
  • Internal Communication: Robust network supports VoIP, internal messaging, and email services for staff communication.

Internet Experience (Staff and Students)

  • Campus-Wide Coverage: Ubiquiti access points provide consistent Wi-Fi coverage across the entire campus.
  • High-Speed Internet: TPG Fibre 250 Mbps line dedicated to educational and administrative activities.
  • Dedicated Internet: TPG also provides NBN 100 Mbps line dedicated to landlines at the college.

Scope of Work

  • Create a secure and scalable network architecture.
  • Separate routers for both the switches, Unifi edge router for the access points, PCs connected with LAN, Security Devices, Staff and student wifi and printers, and Tp-link router connected to the landlines of the staff.
  • Equip all spaces—including the college classrooms, staff departments, and the workshop area—with wired and wireless technologies.
